A member may say “I have KES 100,000 in my SACCO,” but that amount can contain different buckets with different rules. Understanding the distinction between share capital and deposits is essential before joining, borrowing or exiting.

## Share capital is ownership capital

Share capital generally represents the member's ownership stake in the co-operative. A SACCO's by-laws normally define the minimum or required shareholding, transfer rules and how dividends on share capital may be declared.

Do not assume share capital behaves like a normal savings account. Ask whether it can be withdrawn, transferred, refunded or only dealt with under specific exit rules.

## Member deposits support the savings-and-credit model

Deposits are member funds held under the SACCO's rules and can be important for loan qualification. In non-deposit-taking SACCO terminology, non-withdrawable deposits may be refundable on exit rather than available for ordinary day-to-day withdrawal.

## Withdrawable savings are a separate concept

Some regulated deposit-taking SACCOs can offer withdrawable savings products through licensed front-office activity. That is different from assuming every balance called “savings” is available on demand.

## Why the distinction affects loans

A loan product may use qualifying deposits in a multiplier or security formula while treating share capital separately. Ask exactly which balances count, whether pledged amounts are frozen and what happens when you reduce or withdraw eligible balances.

## Why the distinction affects exit

When leaving a SACCO, different balances may have different processes and timelines. Outstanding loans, guarantees, notice periods and by-law provisions can also affect settlement. Read the exit clauses before joining—not only when you want to leave.

## Five questions for your statement

How much is share capital?
How much is non-withdrawable member deposit?
Is there any withdrawable savings balance?
Which balance qualifies me for credit?
Which balance earns a dividend or interest on deposits, if declared?

## Frequently asked questions

### Are SACCO shares the same as savings?

No. Share capital is ownership capital, while savings or deposits are member funds held under the relevant product and by-law rules.

### Can I withdraw SACCO share capital whenever I want?

Not necessarily. Transfer, withdrawal or exit treatment depends on the SACCO’s by-laws and applicable rules.

### Do shares and deposits earn the same return?

Not necessarily. A SACCO may declare dividends on share capital and interest on deposits separately, subject to performance, approvals and its rules.
